TAKE ME HOME

Take me home

“TAKE ME HOME” is an experience design project cooperating with San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SFSPCA). In the past days, shelter staff had to spend lots efforts to move cats around shelters with the current design cat carrier from market. Cats sometimes hurt themselves and staff while resisting entering carriers. The shared plastic carrier also carried germs and smells from other cats which make them even more uncomfortable.

The cardboard material was found perfectly to fit into the new cat carrier design. Shelter does not have to clean or maintain carrier because of the replaceable box. The slide-in inner box gives user(both human and cat) a better way to move cat in the carrier which is like a drawer. Cats live with the carrier when they are in shelter and adopter will keep using it while bringing cat home which will help cats get used to the new environment faster.

ISSUE TO BE ADDRESSED

Cat feels nervous when being transported to different shelter buildings and adopter’s place.  It is very difficult to put cat in carrier with the small-front-door-open style carrier because cats would resist entering it, and they would hurt themselves and other people. Also shareable plastic carrier keep and mix smells from cats which annoys cats. Plus keeping carriers clean brings lots of works for staff. Most changeable thing is: there are two target users, cat and human.

INSIGHTS

Finding out insights is a fun process but tough. Fortunately I had many cats and cats owners surrounded me and offered me inspirations. Cats love the smell and texture of cardboard box. Most of the time they like to crouch in the box or on the top of the place. When being moved around buildings or new home, cats would look around the unfamiliar environment because of nervous and try to find out a safe place to hide.  They would like to have you cannot see me but i can see you when in box. The research included a video recording from cat’s view. A mini camera was attached to the necklace and put it on cat. The recording showed that cat could be very nervous when carrying around new environment.

THERE’S ALWAYS A BETTER WAY

Well, with my ten-years-cat-owner experience, I still had lots discoveries in this project. Cats love cardboard, no doubt. Human like to play with cats, so the box is designed with many holes for them to play and for people to pull out the box easily. At the same time, keep air fresh inside the box. By the way, to keep cats away from artificial adhesive being eco-friendly, this box is assembled without any glue but origami skills and simple mechanism. I am glad this cat carrier was redesigned not just for cats but also for human users. Everyone is happy.

POST-PROJECT

If possible, the box might be redesigned to different sizes for various cats. The long-term goal is to offer more shelters this carrier for free.
